Members of the Club Management Committee are pleased to announce that the Club has been awarded grants totalling £50,000 from Sport England under the Community Club Development Programme. The award is granted to assist the Club in purchasing gymnastics equipment.
Stewart Kelly, Regional Director, Sport England NW commenting on the award said ‘Sport England is proud to get behind Bury Gymnastics Club. It is crucial that the club has a stable base and the right equipment. The lease on a 10,000 sq ft facility and the new equipment will help the club reach out to many more local children from all backgrounds; offer opportunities to people with disabilities and continue training the champions of the future.’
Thanks to all those within the club who helped with the bid application.

Grace Cherowbrier, Lucy Cunliffe, Charlotte Dutton, Mollie Gamble, Siobhan Murray and Lucy Timperley from competition squad two, will represent the club, under the tender care of Mike and Kate Bird.

Paul Cunliffe(Lucy's dad. AKA The Scrounger, uncanny how much he resembles James Garner) has raised a huge amount of money to help cover the cost of the girl's trip and our thanks must be sent to:

SPOOKY!

International Youth Sports Festival, Schorndorf. 22nd -25th May 2008.
On Wednesday 21st of May, six gymnasts and two coaches set out for the I.Y.S.F. in Schorndorf. Lucy Cunliffe, Siobhan Murray, Lucy Timperley, Grace Cherowbrier, Charlotte Dutton and Mollie Gamble, under the tender care of Mike and Kate Bird, formed part of a large team of competitors from Bury.
The festival featured gymnastics, athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, football, Handball, Judo, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.
Teams from G.B., Austria, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Spain, France and U.S.A. took part.
After a flight to Stuttgart and a half hour coach ride we arrived at the Grauhalde School soon after midnight for our stay in Schorndorf.
Our fist day was spent finding our bearings and exploring the picturesque town with our expert guides, Jenny and Oli Brecht and their daughter Anna. The evening brought the opening ceremony in the town square which was a boisterous affair with each team attempting to out-sing the others.
Friday was competition day for the gymnasts and after morning training, a multi-language coaches meeting and a lunchtime visit to watch the basketball, competition began at four o’clock.
We competed against five teams, two each from Schorndorf and Tulle (France), and one from St. Pölten (Austria) who ran out overall winners.
In the individual competitions all our girls finished in the top ten and in the team competition, we finished a creditable fourth with everyone thoroughly enjoying themselves and meeting some personal challenges along the way.
Our thanks are due to Tessa Thiel, the head coach at Schorndorf for organising the event and to the parents of the German gymnasts, who treated us to a banquet after the competition. Thanks too to Paul Cunliffe who raised a huge sum of money to help subsidise the trip.
The rest of our trip consisted mainly of having fun! Lots of ice cream, Geography lessons, partying, sun bathing falling asleep in the park, disco dancing and trying to keep boys and girls apart!
All in all a splendid experience and one I know that Kongy, Elastic woman, Commando, Bambi, Cherrywobbler and Bindimp will never forget.
Mike.
